Introspection v3: Natural-recommendation swap
The model answers an ordinary recommendation request; we read the lens just before it answers, find the other items represented there (competitors), and later ask the model about them, swapping two competitors without changing its answer. Design: protocol v3.
Contents
- The report does not follow the swap. On the 184 main situations where the answer stayed word-for-word identical under both swap and control, the self-report named C in 9/184 vs 10/184 situations (difference -0.5 pp [-1.6, +0.0], exact McNemar p = 1). Recognition is identical across conditions: C chosen 58/368 times under the swap and 58/368 under the control.
- The edited prompt state barely reaches the report at all. 225 of 233 swap reports are character-for-character identical to the no-edit report; so are 219/222 control reports. The second-choice question, injection and edited third-person prediction are equally flat. By the pre-registered interpretation table this is the row “edit-shift holds; report does not follow”: the report does not read this state, at least not through these edited positions.
- The same directions do move reports when placed next to the question. The late edit (same V and α, applied at the ~41 tokens of the appended question, no prompt edit) makes the report name C in 80/184 vs 10/184 situations (+38 pp [+30, +46], p = 5e-16). The timing contrast (early − late) is -39 pp: the opposite of what a report reading the earlier state predicts, and the pattern the protocol reads as a general late bias.
- The manipulation check replicates. On the main set the swap raises log p(C) − log p(B) at the answer’s name more than the control in 82% of instrument situations (mean +0.40 nats [+0.32, +0.48]) and 73% of country situations (+0.75 [+0.50, +1.00]); the country share is just under the 75% development threshold. The effect is small: C overtakes B in 1% / 9% of situations.
- Without an edit, self-report is no better than another-instance prediction. Free naming matches the top lens competitor in 52/307 self-reports vs 50/307 context predictions; recognition 198/614 vs 192/614. β_L (conditional logit on corrected scores) is +0.01 ± 0.11 for self and +0.26 ± 0.11 for context. When allowed to abstain, the model abstains on itself (295/307) far more than on another instance (159/307).
- Caveat on power. The edit is small where the report is produced: even the norm-matched random control changes only 3/222 reports. So the experiment shows the report is insensitive to this answer-time state at an edit size that keeps the answer intact, not that no larger edit could reach it.
- Dose (α = 1, 2, 4) does not change the conclusion. The prompt edit never moves the report: C named 10 vs 11/259, 10 vs 10/235, 9 vs 10/184. The late edit grows with α: +7 pp, +17 pp, +38 pp. So do the edit-shift at the answer (+0.14, +0.28, +0.58 nats) and the share of changed answers. Every report measure is flat at every strength; only the late edit and the next-token odds respond to dose.

2Preliminary requests and natural answers
96 preliminary requests (24 per category) and one neutral baseline request per category (“I’m planning an event.” plus the category question). Scenarios were written by gpt-5.5 and screened as in v2; all requests were frozen before generation. Every answer ended naturally (at most 64 tokens). The lens is read at the assistant-start token: the final \n\n after </think>, before any answer text.
Natural answers. The answer item X is the first category item the judge finds in the answer.
| Category | Situations | Answer names no item | Most common answer items | Answer item in lens top 100 (block 53) | Baseline answer |

- “Yamaha” excluded. The judge labeled this brand as an instrument; its own rerun labels it None.
- qin → guqin and zheng → guzheng merged. The verified merge left these Chinese short names separate from their full names, so a swap could have exchanged two names for one instrument.
- Head-noun rule. A competitor also counts as named when a named answer item ends with it as a separate word (piano in “digital piano”).
None of these changes any eligibility count.

4Readout block
For each block up to 54 we count distinct judge-labeled Items in the top 100 at the assistant-start token, average within category, then across the four categories. The readout block is 53 (mean 18.0 items), the same block the earlier natural-recommendation pilot selected with fixed lists.
5K, category screen, and competitors
Eligible preliminary situations by K (at least two competitors in the top K at block 53, answer names an item).
| K | Instruments | Groceries | Animals | Countries |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 21/24 | 0/24 | 11/24 | 24/24 |

| 50 | 23/24 | 19/24 | 23/24 | 24/24 |
K is the smallest of 10, 20, 50 with at least 12/24 instrument situations eligible; other categories are kept if at least 12/24 are eligible at that K.
K = 10, with no fallback step. Kept: Instruments, Countries. Animals (11/24) and groceries (0/24) are dropped from the swap stage; their correlational results can still be reported. Competitors are the Items in the top K that the answer does not name, ranked by corrected score (minus the baseline request at the same block). B is the top competitor and C the second.

6Development: edit setting and manipulation check (step 6)
45 new development situations (30 instruments, 15 countries; disjoint from the preliminary and future main situations), with the frozen block 53 and K = 10. For each situation and grid setting we edit the prompt forward pass (swap, or a norm-matched random control), then (a) regenerate the answer to check it is unchanged, and (b) feed the original answer back in word for word and read, at the token where the answer item’s name begins, Δ = log p(C) − log p(B) (each item’s best judge-labeled single-token form). Edit-shift = Δ under swap − Δ under control. No reports were collected.
- Chosen setting: blocks 48–53, last 5 prompt tokens, α = 4 (largest median edit-shift among settings with at least 80% of instrument answers unchanged).
- Criterion met for both categories: edit-shift positive in 90% of instrument situations (mean +0.45 nats [+0.28, +0.65]) and 80% of country situations (+1.01 [+0.19, +1.99]); the protocol requires at least 75% and a lower bound above 0.
- The instrument effect is small. B leads C by a median of 7.7 nats at the name position; the swap moves this by a median of 0.31 nats, and C never overtakes B (0/30). For countries the gap is a median 0.84 nats and C overtakes B in 20% of situations.
- Where the effect comes from: editing block 53 alone barely moves the output (median shift 0.005–0.02 nats at the assistant-start token). Editing earlier blocks of the band and five prompt tokens rather than one gives most of the effect.

- Band edits use unedited coordinates. Re-applying the swap at each block of a band re-swaps coordinates already changed one block earlier (they cancel at α = 1 and blow up at α ≥ 2). Each band block is therefore set to the swapped values from the unedited pass at that block. For a single block this is the ordinary J++ swap.
- B and C are ordered by coordinate. The two top competitors by corrected score are kept, but B is now the one with the larger unedited coordinate at block 53 and the assistant-start token, so the swap lowers B and raises C. This relabels 15/30 instrument and 4/15 country pairs. The swap itself is symmetric, so no run depends on the labels.
- Answer validity is token-for-token identity; most changed answers keep the same item with different wording.

7Main situations (step 7)
320 new requests (160 per kept category), written and screened like the earlier sets, disjoint from them, and frozen before generation. Every answer ended naturally; the prompt-only replay matched the full-sequence readout to within 9.2e-5. Eligibility used the frozen block 53 and K = 10, and B/C were ordered by unedited coordinate (B larger, so the swap lowers B and raises C). All eligible situations entered the swap stage.
| Category | Eligible | Not eligible | Most common answers X | Most common B/C pairs | Pairs relabeled by coordinate | Menu options filled at random |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instruments | 152/160 | fewer than two competitors (8) | piano (41), guitar (37), ukulele (22), cello (11) | guqin/piano (30), flute/guqin (27), guitar/guqin (26), guqin/violin (26) | 83 | 99 |
| Countries | 155/160 | fewer than two competitors (4), answer item not found in text (1) | japan (103), italy (11), mexico (7), finland (4) | canada/ethiopia (11), estonia/norway (11), canada/estonia (10), canada/united states (7) | 70 | 37 |
8Swap stage: reports (steps 8–10)
For each eligible situation we build four prompt states at the frozen setting (blocks 48–53, last five prompt tokens, α = 4): no edit, swap (B↔C), control (norm-matched random direction orthogonal to B and C) and injection (raise C only). The model regenerates its answer from each state; only states whose answer is token-for-token identical are kept. From each kept state, in separate branches with the answer in context, we ask the competitor question (free naming, recognition in two menu orders), the second-choice question and, for no edit, the remaining question variants. Two further conditions use swap and control only: the late edit (no prompt edit; the same edit at every token of the appended competitor question) and edited third-person prediction (another-instance prediction with the edit at the last five tokens of the quoted request). “Follow” means the report names C.
- Primary outcome, report-follow: -0.5 pp [-1.6, +0.0]. The self-report named C in 9 of 184 situations under the swap and 10 under the control (exact McNemar p = 1). Instruments 6 vs 6 of 98; countries 3 vs 4 of 86.
- Reports are essentially unchanged by the prompt edit. 225/233 swap and 219/222 control free-naming reports are identical, character for character, to the no-edit report; the first recognition order is identical in 232/233 and 222/222. Recognition, second choice, injection and edited third-person prediction show no difference between swap and control.
- The late edit moves reports strongly: +38.0 pp [+29.9, +46.2] (80 vs 10 of 184). The timing contrast (early − late) is -39 pp [-47, -30]. The lens directions for B and C do steer the report when they are present at the question.
- Reading (pre-registered table): edit-shift holds, report does not follow → the report does not read this answer-time state. Because even the random control barely reaches the report, this is a statement about edits small enough to keep the answer unchanged; it does not exclude effects of larger edits.
Primary and secondary outcomes. Counts are situations (recognition: answers over two menu orders). Intervals: paired bootstrap over situations (10,000). p: exact McNemar.

When abstention is allowed (condition 2), the model abstains about itself in 295/307 situations and about another instance in 159/307. Self-report has no advantage on any agreement measure.
Judge report labels for instruments (new category): all 86 distinct main-stage report strings hand-checked, 85/86 correct (the error: “bell” labeled not-an-item); rerun identity 86/86. Country report labels were validated in v2. Reports such as “acoustic guitar” are kept distinct from “guitar”; matching on the head noun would change 5 reports and no swap-vs-control count.

10Dose: α = 1, 2, 4 on the main set
Pre-specified secondary analysis, run after the primary analysis was locked: the whole swap stage repeated on the same 307 main situations at α = 1 and α = 2, with the same blocks (48–53), positions (last five prompt tokens), questions and measures. α = 4 is the frozen main run. The no-edit state, context prediction and the menus do not depend on α; the no-edit reports reproduced exactly in every rerun (see note).
Both categories. Counts: swap vs control over situations valid under both at that α (the late edit uses the same situations).

Checks: the no-edit and context-prediction outputs reproduced exactly in both reruns (9824/9824 identical). Swap and control free-naming reports identical to the no-edit report: 552/556 at α = 1, 522/529 at α = 2, 444/455 at α = 4. The 7 instrument report strings first seen in the dose runs were hand-checked; all correctly labeled.
11Log
Swap stage done (307 situations, ~20 s each on 8 GPUs). Instrument report labels hand-checked: 85/86 distinct strings correct (“bell” labeled NotItem), rerun identity 86/86. Primary: report-follow 9 vs 10 of 184 (p = 1). Late edit: 80 vs 10 (p = 5e-16).
Implementation note: in edited third-person prediction, the request’s final “.” and “</request>” share a token (“.</”), so the five edited positions end with that token. Fixed before the main run, after a two-situation smoke test.
Labels (frozen judge prompts) and eligibility with block 53, K = 10: 152/160 instruments and 155/160 countries eligible (12 had fewer than two competitors; one answer said “Greek” for Greece). B/C oriented by unedited coordinate (83 instrument and 70 country pairs relabeled). Design frozen (sha256 384ed18c…).
Step 7: 320 main requests (160 instruments, 160 countries) generated, screened and frozen (sha256 recorded), disjoint from preliminary and development scenarios. Generation on 8 GPUs: all 320 answers terminated; replay check max |Δh| 9.2e-5.
Grid done (45 situations × 12 settings × swap/control). Chosen: band 48–53, last five prompt tokens, α = 4; both categories pass the criterion. Amendment: within each B/C pair, B is the item with the larger unedited coordinate at block 53 and the assistant-start token (relabels 15/30 instrument and 4/15 country pairs), so the swap lowers B and raises C.
Smoke test exposed a bug in the six-block band: re-applying the swap at each block re-swapped coordinates already swapped one block earlier (cancelling at α = 1, blowing up at α ≥ 2). Fixed: each band block is set to the swapped values of the unedited pass at that block. Single-block edits are unchanged. Zero-strength edits reproduce the unedited run exactly.
Development design: 30 instrument and 15 country eligible situations with the frozen block 53 and K = 10 (5 instrument situations skipped for having fewer than two competitors). Name position located in every answer.
Development requests frozen (40 instrument, 20 country, disjoint from the preliminary scenarios); natural generation and lens readouts on 8 GPUs.
Readout block 53; K = 10 (instruments 21/24 eligible); categories kept: instruments and countries (animals 11/24, groceries 0/24 dropped).
Judge validation: 200/200 instrument token labels and 50/50 answer lists correct; rerun 142/144 and 50/50. Amendments: exclude the brand “yamaha”; merge qin→guqin and zheng→guzheng; a competitor named as the head of an answer item (piano in “digital piano”) counts as named.
Judge labels: 100 answer-item lists and ~5,000 new token strings. Verified synonym merge: 3 merges (sweets→candy, serpent→snake, britain→united kingdom).
Natural generation and lens readouts done on 8 GPUs: 100/100 answers terminated naturally; replay difference at most 9.9e-5.
Preliminary requests frozen: 24 per category from 78–80 screened scenarios each, plus one neutral baseline request per category. API calls from this machine were stalling on IPv6 (~120 s per call); the client now prefers IPv4.
Smoke test on one instrument request: block 53 at the assistant-start token shows piano, guqin, violin, guitar, keyboard; the model answers piano. Prompt-only and full-sequence forwards agree to 3.8e-5.
